I support providing this information to CTP students. Even for CTP graduates like myself, who was able to work for 14 years with a middle-level income, saving and investing is an important skill. In my case, my disabilities were degenerative over time. As work became ever more challenging, I thought of my investment income as my 'third hand' (a pun on Adam Smith's "invisible hand"). The accumulated investment assets helped me to bridge the gap between the time I last worked to the time I qualified for Social Security. I still have investment assets in my retirement.

Is it possible that the degree I earned from Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill, Ca. back in 1973 as a programmer may still be updated. I learned Cobol back when we punched holes in cards. I never went to work so I never got hands on experience, I tried my hand at horse racing instead - as jockey. When that didn't work out I went back to DVC to see if I could upgrade my degree in 1982. They just laughed at me. I got another A.A. in dental technology and since then I have been miserably trying to earn a living in crown & bridge. What a mistake !! My kids are finally grown and with help of the D.O.R. I am ready to try again. At 60 yrs young, I've got no retirement. Wish me luck - Rich

Hello Michael,

The first step for someone newly disablesd is to become a client of the Department of Rehabilitation. If you are in California you can find the your local office on this page:

http://www.rehab.cahwnet.gov/

The process takes some time, but if you are interested in returning to work after re-training, DoR is your best option. If you are interested in classes at CTP, you can give us a call (see our contact page) or speak with your DoR counslor once you are in their system.

At CTP we understand how difficult transistions in life can be, so we wish you the bets of luck.

I have neen in excellent health my whole life.. Recently, i developed severe vertigo thus i am unable to perform my duties as a lift-truck operator. I have seen several doctors without any of them to diagnose the cause or length of disabling symptoms which I am burdened. I would like the opportunity to take classes to embark on a new career with a second chance as an adult learner aiming for a change of employment starting ASAP second chance life change. I am interested in advancing my skills to better myself. It is time to start taking control of my future. I have always had a natural talent for taking things apart, figuring out what makes it tick, then putting it back together correctly..
